The Ekstraklasa 2020 is the 86th edition of the Poland men's soccer first division league. It is the major Polish football category since 1927. Currently, the Ekstraklasa is made up of sixteen clubs, and the Piast Gliwice is the reigning champion team. This is the first European league that announced a date to resume its season after the suspension due to the Covid-19 spread. By the moment the Ekstraklasa stopped, it was in its decisive phase. So, what was happened so far in the Ekstraklasa 2020?

 

What Had Happened In The Ekstraklasa 2020?

During the regular season, each team plays each other twice in a home and away matches. Then, the top eight finishers dispute the championship round. Meanwhile, the last eight teams play among them a relegation round. The team that achieves most points in the championship round will be the champion and qualifies for the UEFA Champions League second round. From this season, the last three relegation round teams will descend into the second division, the I League.

In the present campaign, the teams promoted from the I League were Raków Częstochowa and ŁKS Łódź. Raków Częstochowa had to wait for 27 seasons to return to the Ekstraklasa, fighting for a spot in the championship round when the season stopped. When the league stopped, Legia Warsaw was leading with 8 points over Piast Gliwice. They had a record of 16-3-7 and a goal differential of +28. They were also the team with the most goals scored at 54. Due to their amazing performance, they're secured their pass to the championship round.

Between the second and eighth place, there was a difference of only 6 points. Besides, there was an intense fight to enter the top eight. Raków Częstochowa and Wisła Płock, with 36 points, were just 1 point from eighth place. Instead, the teams Arka Gdynia and ŁKS Łódź were in the standing's lowest positions. They already have places in the relegation round. The top scorers in this league so far are Christian Gytkjær of the Lech Poznań club and Jarosław Niezgoda of Legia Warsaw. Gytkjær has scored 15 goals, and Niezgoda has 14 scores.

  • There were three or more goals in 73% of Legia Warsaw games, while Korona Kielce saw this amount of goals in only 27% of its matches.

Ekstraklasa will resume season soon!

Polish football fans can smile again. The Polish Prime Minister announced recently that Ekstraklasa would resume by May 29, and the season could end by July 19. This way, Poland is the first European country to announce an official restarting date for its national football league.

The Polish Government, together with sporting organizations, designed a plan to retake the soccer activities. This plan includes playing the rest of the matches without fans in the stadiums and training under strict health procedures.
