He became one of the Portuguese football references at just 23 years old. He scored twenty league goals, to be second among the championship's top scorers. When the season ended, he was the highest-scoring midfielder in Europe with 32 goals in all competitions. Likewise, he won the League Cup and the Portuguese Cup again.

Manchester United had followed up on Fernandes for some time and ended up taking him to Old Trafford. The player arrived in Manchester in January 2020.
