La Liga Golden Boot

The Spanish football's first division managed to end the 2019-2020 season. In terms of this season's top scorer, that is, the winner of La Liga Golden Boot, the predictions were correct. Barça star Lionel Messi finished at the top of the scorers' table in Spain, with 25 goals. Thereby, the Argentine will receive the Pichichi trophy, awarded annually to the scorers' leader of the Spanish league by the Madrid sports newspaper Marca. By achieving this new Pichichi award, the Barça captain becomes the only player to win seven of these trophies.

At the time of the league suspension, Messi was the bookies' wide favorite to win this award. The Bet365 sportsbook offered an odd of just 1,071 in favor of the Argentine striker, far surpassing in favoritism Karim Benzema, who this same bookie gave an odd of 10.00. Messi did not disappoint those who bet on him.

Lionel Messi's 2019-2020 Season

As usual, the FC Barcelona star not only left outstanding statistics in terms of goals scored. Messi's 25 goals were scored in 33 games, giving an average of 0.76 goals per match. Likewise, he provided 21 goal passes to his teammates to break a record that 11 years ago, Xavi, another Barcelona legend, had set. The Argentine experienced the moment of most extraordinary offensive productivity just after his first two games in which only played half of them. Then came 9 games between 10/07/2019 and 12/14/2019 in which he overwhelmed the rival defenses. In that period, he scored 12 goals and provided 6 assists.

This brilliant stretch was followed by a slump that lasted 5 games, in which he only scored 2 times and could not attend any teammate. This drop in performance started with the 0-0 draw at home against Real Madrid. Starting in February 2020, we would see the same Messi as always. In this stage, which was interrupted by the league stoppage, he played the last 17 league's matches. At this phase, he scored 11 goals and gave 15 assists, a figure that allowed him to beat Xavi's record.

The Race For The Pichichi Trophy: The Benzema's Menace

Only Benzema, the French attacker of Real Madrid, could at some point think of threatening Messi's leadership as top scorer in Spain. By the time the league stopped, Messi was beating Benzema by 5 goals (19-on-14). In the last 11 games after the interruption, Benzema scored 7 times, and it even seemed that the Frenchman could catch Messi. However, the Argentine was able to maintain the advantage. At the end of the season, the scorers' table was as follows:

  • Leo MESSI (FC Barcelona) 25
  • Karim BENZEMA (Real Madrid) 21
  • GERARD MORENO (Villarreal) 18
  • Luís SUÁREZ (FC Barcelona) 16
  • RAÚL GARCIA (Athletic) 15

A new season of La Liga has ended, and once again Lionel Messi has won the top scorer award. We hope to continue enjoying one of the best players in history for a few more seasons. Indeed, he will continue achieving awards such as that of 2020 La Liga Golden Boot.
