What Happened To PSG?

This is one of the big questions that during the 2021/22 season has been repeated most throughout European football. Indeed, throughout the whole football world. Exactly one year ago, it was supposed that the entire planet would be celebrating the victories of this team by this time. Besides, they were supposed to become the last phenomenon in football. Following the signing of a series of super players, everybody expected that, led by none other than Leo Messi. In other words, the expectations of the leaders of the Parisian team were literally from another galaxy. PSG expected to win everything from Ligue 1 to the Champions League. But, beyond the championships, the team was expected to have a global impact as a powerful brand, like Real Madrid or Manchester United.

PSG Performance

All the football fans expected Leo Messi to lead PSG to a stage of glory that he had never enjoyed. So, a lot was expected. But the reality has been very different. PSG's season has been characterized by irregularity. Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino has not been able to assemble a team that plays the spectacular football the fans wanted. Also, despite the Parisian team having acquired some of the best players globally, those coached by Pochettino have only managed to excel in Ligue 1. Everything points to PSG (unless something very unexpected happens) obtaining the Ligue 1 championship. Any French team would be more than satisfied with this achievement. However, it is little compared to what PSG invested in buying players to reach international glory.

PSG was eliminated from the French Cup at the end of January, which already served as a warning. So, what would happen later would be worse. They were out of the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. This defeat has changed the whole panorama of the team. The elimination from the Champions League brought out all the problems for PSG. These problems begin with the frustration of a coach who has not been able to take advantage of having stars like Leo Messi and Neymar. The truth is that except for Kylian Mbappé, the rest of the PSG players do not shine like the superstars they are supposed to be. But, PSG's big problem is that it hasn't worked as a team. There is no synergy among the players, and the great concern is what will happen next season. Indeed, the team's future is much more worrying than the present.

Thus, it will be necessary to move some pieces. It is already mentioned that PSG needs a new coach, and a true leader, somebody more efficient than Pochettino. Anyway, very difficult times will come for the team when their great leader Kylian Mbappé finally leaves for another team -possibly Real Madrid. So, this would leave PSG in limbo, which will require Leo Messi, Neymar, and the rest to prove what they are supposed to be. Regardless of whether they achieve the Ligue 1 championship, sadly, for the PSG, big names didn't translate into big football.
